Porto Cálem was founded in 1859 by Antonio Alves Cálem and was initially a pure trading house that exported port wines from the Douro Valley to Brazil and imported rare woods and exotic fruits back to Portugal from there. The Cálem logo, which features a merchant caravel, still bears witness to this tradition of over one hundred and fifty years. The increasing economic success was based in particular on the Cálem family’s consistent commitment to high quality and the constant investment in modernising the vineyards. In 1998, Porto Cálem became part of the Sogevinus Group, which is responsible for a large number of wineries and wines. Although this transition ended a family tradition, it was the right step for the international success of port wines, as Cálem developed into one of the world’s best-known port wine producers under the management of the Sogevinus Group. The numerous awards won at international wine competitions in France, Japan and the USA are testament to this success.
Cálem port wine is probably the best-known port wine in Germany. However, Porto Cálem is even better known in the home country of port wine, where the name Cálem is familiar to every child and the normal qualities can be found in every household. The Cálem Tawny Port and the Cálem Ruby Port can be found in bars there, as can the Cálem White Port. In our shop you will also find a range of Cálem Aged Tawny Ports (10 year old Tawny, 20 year old Tawny) as well as Late Bottled Vintage Ports and of course the premium wines from the Porto Cálem Vintage Port vintages.
