2016 Chambertin Grand Cru- Hospices de Beaune
The history of the Hospices de Beaune dates back to the 15th century, when it was a hospital for the poor and the sick. This hospital is located directly in Beaune, in the heart of the best vineyards in Burgundy. Over the centuries, the Hospices received many of the best vineyards in Burgundy through donations and inheritances from rich winegrowers and was thus able to cover the hospital’s costs with the proceeds from wine sales. Even today, the proceeds from wine sales benefit the hospital and other charitable organisations, and the world’s most famous charity wine auction will take place on the 3rd weekend in November 2016. On the evening before the auction, numerous wineries traditionally open their doors and invite wine critics and visitors to taste the wines. The auction takes place the following day. On the third day, the traditional “Paulée” of Meursault closes the event. The wines marketed during the auction are now matured in barrels for a further 18-24 months. The wine will then be bottled and delivered in autumn 2018. 2016 was a challenging vintage for the winegrowers. The changing temperatures during the growing phase, cold in the morning and warm in the evening, demanded a lot of knowledge and work from the winegrowers to achieve the best possible results. A glorious late summer gave the grapes the eagerly awaited “finishing touches” and ensured a very high-quality harvest for those who are among the best in their field. “Qualité en Primeurs” is the motto; only the best grapes are selected from the harvest and matured into the world’s excellent premium wines, refined and bottled two years later by the Hospices de Beaune and delivered to us.
